Emergent Grid Automata
A generative system in which images become living computational ecologies.
Drawing from cellular automata, the work translates visual information into evolving fields of autonomous cells. Patterns emerge, replicate, disappear, and reorganize themselves according to simple local rules.
The resulting image is never fixed. It behaves less like a photograph and more like an organism.
The work explores the possibility that contemporary images are no longer static representations but dynamic systems.
**Artistic Context**
The project is situated within ongoing investigations into memory, archives, digital materiality, and computational culture.
Rather than treating technology as a tool for producing ever more realistic images, What Remains uses reduction, degradation, and abstraction to reveal the structures through which contemporary vision is mediated.
The work proposes that loss is not the opposite of information. Loss can also be a method of understanding.
